Cellphone ban takes effect
BANGALORE: Students, beware. The next time you want to make a call on your cellphone in school or college, think again. A member of the implementation committee, specially instituted to keep an eye on you, may be watching. And if caught, your cellphone will be seized.
The state government has banned the use of cellphones on campuses. The ban, which will come into immediate effect, is applicable for students from classes I-XII.

It’s not just students, even teachers and non-teaching staff have been banned from using their cellphones while on campus.
According to the October 5, 2007 order issued by commissioner for Public Instruction G Kumar Naik, every school and college will have an implementation committee to implement the ban. The committee will be headed by the school/college principal and will have senior teacher/lecturer, besides the physical instructor.
“We had complaints that students were using cellphones to listen to music in class, play games and send SMSes. We decided to extend the ban for teachers and other staff because students must not feel that teachers are allowed to use cellphones, while they are banned from doing so,’’ Naik told The Times of India.
Schools have welcomed the move as it will instil discipline on campuses.”In some schools, students were using cellphones during the lunch break or physical education or craft periods, specially at the secondary and senior secondary levels. They would talk to friends and skip classes to watch movies. This will put an end to all that,’’ said Krishna Iyer, general secretary, Karnataka English Medium Schools Managements Association.

What does the ban say? The government has banned with immediate effect the use of cellphones by students (classes I-XII), teaching, non-teaching and other staff of government schools, unaided and aided schools. Students cannot use cellphones during school hours on school premises.
